Introduction: NASA is an investment in America?s future. Two of the key missions of the Agency to which the subject of this NASA Research Announcement (NRA) directly relates are to advance and communicate knowledge and understanding of the Earth, the solar system, and the universe; and to advance human exploration, use, and development of space. In charting NASA?s vision for the future and plan for accomplishing its mission, the Agency has created the NASA Strategic Plan 2000. The plan includes near term priorities, such as construction and operation of the International Space Station (ISS), and longer term investments, including scientific and technological research. In recognizing the revolutionary role of biotechnology in the 21st century and also to take advantage of the unprecedented capabilities of the International Space Station (ISS) for conducting world class physical, chemical, and biological research, NASA created the Office of Biological and Physical Research (OBPR) on October 2, 200...
