Excerpt
Excerpt: The use of portfolios in education has emerged over recent years as an effective means of collecting, selecting, and communicating the professional growth of pre-service (Norton-Meier, 2003; Testerman & Hall, 2001) and working teachers, (Drake & McBride, 2000; Zayani, 2001) and documenting the educational development of students in all levels of education (Anderson, Bachor, & Baer, 2001). For students, portfolios provide a means for collecting and reflecting on the processes and results of their learning achievements over time (Chang, 2001); when coupled with rich evaluation rubrics, portfolios offer teachers a way to support students in meeting rigorous content standards across an integrated curriculum (Skawinski & Thibodeau, 2002); and when integrated across school curricula and infrastructures, portfolios can be used to aggregate student learning data without resorting exclusively to the limited information provided by the results of standardized tests (Dubrovich, 2002).
