Excerpt
Excerpt: Legend; Entry titles are arranged in alphabetical order by using, whenever possible, the most commonly used names of the laws, followed by more - - or less -- formal titles, if any. Alternative names of laws are separated by asterisks (*). The year (e.g., '83) following the law name, if provided, indicates the year in which the law was enacted and/or put into effect; amendment years are not shown. Japanese words are spelled according to the Hepburn system of romanization, with long vowels and diphthongs spelled as when they are entered on a Romaji keyboard of a Japanese word processor--e.g., chuushou kigyou, rather than chusho kigyo. The older Hepburn practice of using m instead of n before p, b, or m is NOT used here (e.g., minpou, not mimpou, for civil code). An apostrophe is used to indicate the syllable-final n, as in un'ei. English translations of the law names are given in three different ways:
